Mnet’s 20′s Choice Awards 2011

Hosted by rising stars Song Joong Ki and miss A‘s Suzy, the Mnet 20′s Choice awards crowned this summer’s hottest stars, including on-screen couple Cha Seung Won and Gong Hyo Jin from the drama The Greatest Love.

The trophies? White & blue ukeleles!
Unfortunately, a number of issues — bad weather, celebs showing up late because of traffic due to the rain (ie. Gong Hyo Jin), lots of awkward moments, and some more bad weather — caused this year’s festivities to be quite the letdown and a bit uncomfortable to watch.
The summer awards ceremony was broadcast in place of this week’s M!Countdown and featured 4Minute‘s HyunA‘s comeback performance of “Attention” and “Bubble Pop,” as well as Kim Hyun Joong‘s new remix of “Break Down.”

Super Junior‘s Heechul and TRAX‘s Jungmo (collectively known as M&D) also performed their debut single “Close Ur Mouth” for the first time, along with special performances by f(x), G.NA, and YB (Yoon Do Hyun Band).

Netizens complained that everything seemed disorganized and half-assed, with presenters and award winners not really knowing where to go, mics not being handed off properly, etc. The broadcast essentially screamed, “We don’t know what to do because of this gosh darn rain!”
Yes, it did rain, and yes, that does suck, but bad weather is no excuse for a lack of readiness and professionalism.
Additionally, 2AM and BEAST, who won awards for “Hot Balance Star” (whatever that means) and “Hot Performance Star” respectively, each sent one member (Jo Kwon and Lee Ki Kwang) to accept the award on their group’s behalf due to busy schedules. Netizens were glad to see that Korea’s top idol groups considered these awards a top priority and a great honor (yes, that’s sarcasm right there).
Live broadcasts are always difficult to time correctly, usually with MCs rushing acceptance speeches, but this time, the awards ceremony ended a full 30 minutes early!
So the poor young rookie MCs dragged out the closing for as long as they could, and then they just filled up the remainder of the broadcast with HyunA and Kim Hyun Joong’s music videos. What a way to end a show…
